140 recovered parrots released back into the wild on yesterday, they were confiscated by airport officials in Bulgaria about 2 years ago. The parrots were transported back into Uganda and because of the bad condition they were in conservationists saw it wise to keep them at the ZOO( Uganda Wildlife Educational Center at Entebbe)
“The bird (species) we are releasing today in the wild is one of the most sought bird in Africa, many of them are being illegally captured for illegal trade and sold outside Africa,” said Julius Kasigwa, a veterinary doctor with Uganda Wildlife Education Center.
The African Grey parrots are rare endangered species and therefore very much sought after. On the black mark one African Grey Parrot costs $200,000. They are also very intelligent animals.
