Long before the tomato based French Dressing, French Salad dressing was made using oil and vinegar. The old-fashioned French Dressing is akin to our modern Italian Salad dressing. The following recipe is from School and Home Cooking.

Ingredients

clove of garlic or a slice of onion 1 t
salt 6 T
salad oil 1⁄2 t
paprika 2 T
vinegar or lemon juiceInstructions
- Rub a bowl with the clove of garlic or slice of onion.
- Add the remainder of the ingredients, and stir until well blended.
- More vinegar or lemon juice may be used, if desired.
- Chopped parsley or mint may be added.
Fruit Salads
- Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon lemon juice to the above recipe.
- Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon celery salt, if desired.
Notes
- Use a jar or small container to mix the salad dressing.
